Technology overview

The road to the Mobile Internet has taken many a circuitous route, with SMS becoming the unexpected darling of the mobile telecommunications industry and WAP becoming an over-hyped failure. Yet WAP has remained a key underlying technology which now facilitates MMS. GPRS, finally, is providing the necessary "always-on" connectivity, which makes the downloading of WAP content or Java J2ME applications viable and cost-effective.
