Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)
Java technology from Sun Microsystems, Inc. is a robust and simple programming language which is designed to be architecture neutral. In the Mobile Internet space, J2ME is very exciting as it is estimated that there will be 421 million J2ME-enabled devices by 2003 and over 1.1 billion by 2006.
Java for mobile phones allows phone users to download software applications (often called midlets, see www.midlet.org for downloads) onto their phones. Applications such as games, business tools, information tickers and Internet utilities are just some of the available J2ME midlets.
Of the big 5 GSM mobile phone manufacturers, some their J2ME-enabled phones (available in South Africa):
|Nokia||6610, 3410, 7210, 6310i, 7650, 9210i|
|Motorola||A008, T280i, V66i, V60i|
